Machinability Testing
Are you using the same tooling and process recommendations your tooling vendor provides to your competitors? Let EMI help you find the best conditions for your applications. EMI offers quick results at an attractive price. How? Evolving from over 15 years of experimental research experience, EMI has developed specialized software and instrumentation that result in standard, repeatable and highly efficient testing.

Standard testing services include:

  • ISO standard tool life testing:  Tests can be conducted on bar stock under continuous cutting conditions as well as simulated intermittent cutting conditions.  Testing can be done dry or wet, and with or without force/power measurements.  Each test is repeated a minimum of three times.  A standardized, easily interpreted summary, as well as all test details, are provided in an electronic report (sample pages to left).  The summary includes wear vs. time for as many speeds and feeds as desired, as well as Taylor model coefficients and, if force/power data are desired, force and power evolution with wear.
  • Force modeling:  Semi-empirical force/power model calibration testing provides a simple model/equation that yields quantitative dependence on any of the following process variables:  feed, depth of cut, cutting speed, rake geometry, corner radius, lead angle.  In addition, sensitivity to edge preparation variation can be included.  Test plans are strategically randomized and repeated a minimum of three times.
EMI can also work with you to plan specialized machinability testing, conducted at our facility or yours, and then process, reduce and interpret the data. Click for details.
